2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Talk Series

Weekly Commentary (Updated: June 15, 2023): There are 19 talk series among the submissions including newly moved to the category “The Problem with Jon Stewart” from Apple and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from ABC. This will allow five nominees to be named.

Late night staples and Emmy darlings Stephen Colbert and Kimmel could be the biggest benefactors from John Oliver being moved to the scripted variety category, in addition to Seth Meyers who nabbed his first nom in this race last year.

Former nominees James Corden and Trevor Noah have both left their long-standing late-night shows, and there could be a sentimental wave of votes coming their way.

“The Late Late Show with James Corden” ended on a high note, scoring 1.43 million viewers with its series finale. The show moved up 77% from its season-to-date Live+Same Day average.

Regarding the host of Comedy Central’s flagship program, he bid a low-key farewell earlier this year. The guest hosts for the show which included Chelsea Handler, John Leguizamo, Leslie Jones and Kal Penn, all saw rating increases. Unsure if this will factor into voting since his departure was some time ago.

In other related news, HBO has confirmed the TV Academy has moved “The Pause With Sam Jay” to the talk series category from scripted variety. Jay will compete alongside its two network counterparts “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “A Tiny Audience.”

I think (?) the first Spanish language program has been submitted in this race with “¡Siéntese Quien Pueda!” from UniMás. That could make things exciting.

“Walking Dead” fans will rejoice knowing Chris Hardwick’s “Talking Dead” from AMC is also among the entries.
