2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Comedy Series
Weekly Commentary (Updated: June 15, 2023): Emmy voting has begun.
In comedy, the list includes new series like FX’s “The Bear,” Apple’s “Shrinking” and Netflix’s “Wednesday.” In addition, farewell seasons are in the midst such as Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” HBO’s “Barry” and maybe Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.” This year’s 95 entries compared to 118 entries last year (which was believed to be a new record), as well as 68 in 2021 and 111 in 2020.
“Ted Lasso” is the reigning champion after two consecutive wins at the Emmys, but ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and “The Bear” are going to give it a run for their money this time around.
Alongside “Lasso” and “Abbott” are other returning shows celebrating their final seasons — “Barry” and “Maisel.” In addition, other returning nominees in the mix are Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” and FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows.”
“Abbott” would be the first broadcast show since “Modern Family” to win at the Emmys, and it would be a nice boost of encouragement with the writers’ strike and impending SAG negotiations underway.
“The Bear” isn’t the only freshman series in the mix. Apple’s “Shrinking” and Netflix’s “Wednesday” are the leading candidates to join the shortlist, with others like Peacock’s “Poker Face” and Freevee’s “Jury Duty” on the bubble hoping to find some love.

About the Primetime Emmy Awards
The Primetime Emmy Awards, better known as the Emmys, are given out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Since 1949, the awards have recognized excellence in American primetime television programming. They are divided into three classes – Primetime Emmy Awards, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards (honors artisan achievements), and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards (recognizes significant engineering and technological contributions). The typical eligibility period is between June 1 and May 31 of any given year. The Television Academy comprises over 25,000 members, representing 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors, artisans, and executives.
